Paper-based resources

The national math centre contains many paper-based resources covering a wide range of topics. The quick reference leaflets are ideal to use if you need a refresher. However if you are new to the topic area or need more explanation then teach-yourself booklets are more ideal. You can download and print these resources and work through them in your own time and at your own place.

 

Just the maths   'Just the Maths' is a collection of separate units, in chronological topic-order, intended to service foundation level and first year degree level courses. All units are presented as PDF files. The techniques are demonstrated by worked examples and reinforced by exercises. Answers to exercises are supplied at the end of each unit of work

 

learning-space.jpgThe website gives free access to Open University course materials. This is the LearningSpace where you'll find hundreds of free study units, each with a discussion forum. Study independently at your own pace or join a group and use the free learning tools to work with others.

Video resources

math_tutor.jpgVideo tutorials, with diagnostics, summary text and exercises, take you through more than eighty topics in the way you choose. You can view and work with them online, or order them on DVD-ROM.

 

helm.jpgThis site contains a wide range of short videos that link in with the HELM Booklets. Although aimed at Engineers the material is still relevant and useful for non-engineers.

 

The video resources provided by the Mathcentre are ideal to use if you are new to the topic area since they go at a pace which students feel comfortable following.   

 

Skills @ library   Experienced teachers demonstrate solutions to a wide range of maths problems that are known to challenge students. The solutions are presented as a series of short video clips displayed on the screen in a step-by-step format.

 

BRIGHTSTROM Over 2000 online videos cover Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus and Calculus. Teachers give quick, clear explanations of concepts and homework problems.

Interactive resources

Interactive Mathematics    This is a database of interactive PDF files. Topics are split into small chunks which makes it an ideal resource for you to use independently as self-study material. There are many examples and questions for you to work through.

Mathematics Hyper-Tutorials  This is another database of interactive PDF files. The functionality is similar to the Interactive Mathematics database but more advanced calculus topics are covered.

Mathletics    This is a set of assessments in many areas of mathematics at the levels of GCSE, AS, A level, and first- and second-year university.

This site covers topics such as basic numerical skills, elementary functions, graphs and charts etc. It is built as a series of toolkits, some of which are web-based and interactive whilst others are currently printable files (Excel or PDF).

 

Go get papers     This site covers a wide range of topics: Mathematics, Calculus and Statistics. You can also find C++ Tutorials and Java Tutorials.
You can access global open educational resources, for example, Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenCourseWare, China Open Resource for Education, the University of California etc.
