Numeracy, Maths and Stats - Resources for Staff

The following pages contain resources that have been developed and exploited at Brunel University across a wide range of undergraduate courses and levels.

Mathematics

math_center.jpgThe national math centre contains resources covering a wide range of topics in a number of different formats.

The quick reference leaflets are ideal to use with students who have covered the material previously but may need a refresher. However, for students who are new to the topic area or need more explanation, then the teach-yourself booklets are ideal for students to work through in their own time and at their own pace.

Foundation level and level 1 non-mathematicians find the video resource helpful to work though since they go at a pace which students feel comfortable following.

Just the maths      'Just the Maths' is a collection of separate units, in chronological topic-order, intended to service foundation level and first year degree level courses in HE. Each unit represents, on average, the work to be covered in a typical one-hour lecture. All units are presented as teaching slides in PDF format.

learning_space.jpgThe website gives free access to Open University course materials. This is the LearningSpace, where you'll find hundreds of free study units.

library_skills.jpgExperienced teachers demonstrate solutions to a wide range of maths problems that are known to challenge students. The solutions are presented as a series of short video clips displayed on the screen in a step-by-step format.

helm.jpgThis site contains a wide range of short videos that link in with the HELM Booklets. Although aimed at Engineers the material is still relevant and useful to non-engineers.

Statistics

HyperStat Online Statistics Textbook  This is an online textbook which covers a range of topics, including probability, confidence interval and hypothesis testing.

statsoft.jpgThis is an electronic statistics textbook which covers a wide range of statistical topics, particularly application of statistics.
The material covered is ideal for both undergraduates and postgraduate students.

stat-glory.jpgThis glossary is ideal to have as an additional resource to use while you are learning statistics.

center-for-innovation.jpgPDF files on A-level topics in statistics and further statistics. Each chapter covers a particular topic and contains theory, examples and exercises. Solutions are not provided for free, an extra subscription is required to gain access to the solutions.

Statnotes: Topics in Multivariate Analysis   This is an on-line statistics book which has been developed by David G Garson. This book covers a wide range of topics, focusing on key terms and concepts. It also shows how statistical tests can be computed using SPSS and how results from SPSS should be analysed.

Numeracy

bbc.jpgThis site contains some excellent revision materials and online tests at GCSE level. It is ideal for students to use to brush up on basic numeracy skills. There is revision material, activities and online tests that students can complete to ensure that they fully understand the basic techniques.

skills-wise.jpgThis site contains material on basic numeracy topics such as whole numbers, fractions etc. The examples and questions are applied to 'real-life' situations so students can see how certain techniques can be applied to everyday calculations.

Also take a look at:

MATHIN SITE This site contains Java applets and corresponding worksheets. This resource is ideal to use as part of weekly seminar work. The interactive nature of the resource adds diversity to seminar work.

Topics covered range from pure mathematical topics (such as straight lines, complex numbers, differentiation etc.) to more applied topics such as second order linear systems and projectiles.

Mathematics Hyper-Tutorials This is another database of interactive PDF files developed by the University of Salford. The functionality is similar to the Interactive Mathematics database developed by the University of Portsmouth but more advanced calculus topics are covered.

GeoGebra is a free mathematical software that develops dynamic worksheets in geometry, algebra and calculus. There is currently a database of worksheets available to use but the software is very simple and easy to use and so can be used by anyone to develop new worksheets.
